Union Pacific 844

On June 20, 2013, I chanced upon Union Pacific 844 in Omaha, NE. The locomotive was on public display next to the Omaha Baseball Stadium. Union Pacific 844 was the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific in 1944 and is the only steam locomotive to never be retired by an American railroad.

    844 was built in 1944 by the American Locomotive Company. It is a class FEF (Four-Eight-Four) 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive. It was the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific and has never been retired off of the active roster.

    Our chance encounter with 844 was thanks to the College World Series in Omaha, NE. The UP brought the locomotive, Centennial Diesel and some passenger cars for display across from the stadium.
